6th January 2014 DRT

It's a quiet day today with big sides playing in small competitions.
KILLER STATS
715pm - Brest v Paris St-G - 1.3 away

  • Brest have only won 3 home matches in all competitions since July 2013. One was a friendly.
  • PSG have lost only 2 of their last 28 Coupe de France matches in 90 minutes.
  • PSG have not lost an away Coupe de France match in their last 19 played.

745pm - Sunderland v Man Utd - 1.81 away

  • Only a ridiculous defensive lapse against Aston Villa has stopped Sunderland recording a run of 7 matches unbeaten in all competitions.
  • Sunderland have lost only 2 of their last 13 League Cup matches in 90 minutes.
  • Man Utd are on a run of 2 consecutive 1-2 defeats.
  • Away from home, Man Utd are unbeaten in 11 matches.
  • Man Utd have not lost a league cup match in 90 minutes since 2011.

9pm - Valencia v Atl Madrid - 2.4 away

  • Since the start of 2012 in the Copa del Rey, only Sevilla, Barcelona and Real Madrid have beaten Valencia.
  • Valencia are unbeaten in their last 10 home Copa matches.
  • Atl Madrid have won their last 7 matches, scoring 2 goals + in each.
  • Atl Madrid are unbeaten in 11 Copa del rey matches with only 1 going to extra time ( 1-2 win over Real Madrid).

715pm - Brest v Paris St-G - 1.3 away
Standout stats

  • This is a Coupe de France match.
  • Brest are a Ligue 2 side and PSG are top flight.
  • Brest have had 3 losses in their last 9 matches overall, all 1-0 defeats. In all of those last 9 matches, Brest never conceded more than 1 goal.
  • Brest have had a rough time of it at home. They used to be Ligue 1. Now in Ligue 2 , they have only won 3 home matches since July 2013, 1 of which was a friendly. They are on a run of 5 home matches without a win.
  • Brest's last 2 wins in the cup were at home to Sables and Cherbourg. I suspect PSG are a level above!
  • Brest are unbeaten at home in the cup, albeit only 3 matches and the last in 2009.
  • on the 18th December, PSG needed extra time to beat St Etienne after a 90 minute 1-1 draw in the Coupe de la ligue.
  • PSG have lost 2 of their last 3 away matches , one was against Benfica in the Champions League.
  • It looks as if PSG are up for the cup in the Coupe de France. They have only lost 2 of their last 28 Coupe de France matches in 90 minutes.
  • PSG have not had an away defeat in the Coupe de France in their last 19 matches.
  • 5 of those 19 away matches went to extra time, the other 14 were won in 90 minutes.
Profitable in play opportunities
  • In a tight coupe de la ligue match, it was Cavani who scored PSG's goal in normal time and winner in extra time, so the importance of seeing Cavani and Ibrahimovic cannot be under-played.
  • On the surface, PSG like a cup run and should come through, although getting an angle in is difficult as both they and Brest are playing teams from all diffierent levels.
  • The most PSG have scored away recently in the cup is 4 goals but they did only score a single goal in 2 of their last 3 matches.

745pm - Sunderland v Man Utd - 1.81 away

Standout stats

  • A nervy and unreliable Man Utd travel to Sunderland in the League cup. In October's Premiership visit, United needed 2 Janujaz goals to come from behind and win.
  • Only a ridiculous defensive lapse against Aston Villa has stopped Sunderland recording a run of 7 matches unbeaten in all competitions. They should never have lost to Aston Villa so that match really has to be taken within the context of the gift of a goal in a 0-1 defeat.
  • During this run, Sunderland beat Everton 1-0 and beat Chelsea in the League Cup 2-1 after extra time.
  • Since the 27th August 2013, the only teams to have beaten Sunderland at home in all competitions has been Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea , Tottenham, and that abberation against Aston Villa..
  • Within this run, wins came against Newcastle, Southampton, Manchester City, Chelsea so Sunderland are unlucky it seems to be where they are.
  • Let's look at Sunderland in the League Cup. They have only lost 2 of their last 13 matches in 90 minutes.
  • Sunderland are unbeaten in their last 4 League cup matches, winning 3 in 90 minutes  ( including the scalp of Southampton), and beating Chelsea most recently after extra time.
  • That run of 4 incidentally came at home.
  • Manchester United are breaking club records and stats this season, and 2 consecutive 1-2 home defeats follows on from earlier consecutive home defeats in the Premiership. This was unheard of in the Ferguson era.
  • A run of 6 wins preceded these most recent 1-2 lapses against Tottenham and against Swansea in the FA Cup ( red card and 90th+ minute Swansea winner).
  • Man Utd are unbeaten in 11 away matches though in all competitions. Less pressure on Moyes away from the thousands of prying eyes at the Theatre of Nightmares?
  • Man Utd have kept 3 clean sheets in their last 4 away matches.
  • Man Utd have not lost a league cup match in 90 minutes since 2011 began. In 2013, they have won their 3 League cup matches, against Liverpool, Norwich City and Stoke City, to nil.
  • Away from home in the League Cup, United have kept 3 clean sheets in their last 4 matches .This was punctuated by the 4-5 extra time win over Chelsea.
Profitable in play opportunities
  • For the sake of his sanity, Moyes will not want a 3rd consecutive defeat, regardless of the competition.
  • Depending on team news, this is a really tough match for Manchester United against a Sunderland side who admittedly at home have only fallen foul of the top 10 Premiership sides, yet still beat 4 of said top 10.
  • Playing the probabilities, ask yourself whether a 3rd consecutive Manchester United defeat will be tolerated. Is that the angle in if Sunderland score first, as they did in the earlier Premiership encounter ?

9pm - Valencia v Atl Madrid - 2.4 away

Standout stats

  • This is the Copa del Rey. I was wondering why Atl Madrid's odds were higher than expected.
  • This is the first leg so it's effectively half-time.
  • Valencia's last 2 defeats came against Atl Madrid ( 3-0) and Real Madrid (2-3). Apart from those defeats, Valencia kept 5 clean sheets in 8 matches  - signs of a return to form?
  • 5 of 6 Valencia home defeats since February 2013 were "one-goal-in-it" defeats where both sides scored.
  • Valencia's only defeat in their last 6 matches was against Real Madrid at home 2-3
  • Since the start of 2012 in the Copa del Rey, only Sevilla, Barcelona and Real Madrid have beaten Valencia. Atl Madrid, it is argued, can be lumped in with those 2 latter sides at present.
  • Valencia have lost only 1 of their last 8 Copa del rey matches, keeping 4 clean sheets.
  • Valencia have only lost 1 of their last 20 home Copa del rey matches in 90 minutes.
  • Valencia are unbeaten in their last 10 home Copa matches.
  • Since August 2013, Atl Madrid have lost only 1 match in all competitions.
  • Atl Madrid have won their last 7 matches, scoring 2 goals + in each.
  • Since August 2013, only Espanyol have beaten Atl Madrid away from home.
  • Atl Madrid are unbeaten in 11 Copa del rey matches with only 1 going to extra time ( 1-2 win over Real Madrid).
  • Since 2012, Atl Madrid are unbeaten away from home, drawing 4 of their last 5 Copa matches.
Profitable in play opportunities
  • This is only the first leg. Valencia have drawn with Barcelona and Real Madrid 1-1 in first legs at home, so 1-1 might be an obvious opening trading position.
  • This is a difficult match to fathom as both sides are in such good Copa del rey form. Valencia have lost only 1 of their last 20 Copa del rey matches at home , and Atl Madrid are unbeaten in their last 11 Copa del rey matches.
  • Lay Atl Madrid if they score first?
