9th May 2014 create value from short prices.

Here is an excerpt of April's article on "creating value from short prices"
Follow this step-by-step strategy to optimise your chances of collecting an evens return time after time.
1) Ensure you know your fractional and decimal odds.  This will allow you to use both the bookmakers and www.betfair.com as your resources with which to mine for 1/5, 1 /4 and 1/3 shots. For the record, a 1/5 shot is 1.20 in decimal odds. A 1 /4 shot is 1.25 in decimal odds. A 1/3 shot is 1.33 in decimal odds.
2) Don’t restrict yourself to backing selections in order to make your quota of 1/5 , 1/4 and 1/3 shots. With our ability to lay ( as the patriarch reminds us this month), we can get the same return as a 1/5 , 1/4 and 1/3 shot by laying selections at certain prices. Keep a note of the lay odds below which correspond to the same as backing the selection.
1/5 shot is 1.20  - lay a selection at 6.00  . Backing a 1.20 shot with £100 will return £20. Laying a selection at odds of 6.00 for £100 liability ( not stake) will return around £20.
1 /4 shot is 1.25 – lay a selection at 5.00. Backing a 1.25 shot with £100 will return £25. Laying a selection at odds of 5.00 for £100 liability ( not stake) will return around £25.
1/3 shot is 1.33 – lay a selection at 4.00. Backing a 1.33 shot with £100 will return £33. Laying a selection at odds of 4.00 for £100 liability ( not stake) will return around £33.

What I am going to attempt now is to try and sniff out a 1.2, 1.25 or 1.3 shot which can be backed, or a 6.00, 5.00 or 4.00 shot which can be layed.
I will use the techniques I suggested within the article. I hope you find it informative

Yesterday saw all horses win/place bar the 550 Clonmel . 9 out of the 10 tennis shorties won in 2 sets. All 10 won yesterday.  Football wise, a full house depending on how high you went goals wise with Spain women. The German ladies scored 9 goals!!

RACING POST SHORTLISTERS/PRICE GAPPERS. We look to find horses with an obvious chance of winning, but we want to back them in the TO PLACE ONLY  market.

245 Chester
Betting forecast: 13/8 Hillstar, 5/2 Brown Panther, 16/1 Banoffee, 40/1 Jathabah.

SPOTLIGHT VERDICT: Brown Panther and, in particular, Hillstar have to be respected but preference is for MOUNT ATHOS, who has leading form claims on good efforts in the Melbourne Cup and Sheema Classic in two of his last four runs and who showed tactical versatility when adopting front-running tactics on his way to winning this last year. [Mel Cullinan]

4 horses and only 2 places here.

-------------------------------------------------------
445 Lingfield
Betting forecast: 4/5 Penny Drops, 11/2 Solar Moon, 8/1 Backstage Gossip, 10/1 Majestic Song, 12/1 Oasis Mirage, 14/1 Katawi, 14/1 Misstemper, 20/1 Chufft, 33/1 Champagne Charley, 33/1 Diamond Solitaire, 33/1 Dorset Gift.

SPOTLIGHT VERDICT: Some interesting sorts for the future, notably Backstage Gossip, Katawi, Majestic Song and Solar Moon, but PENNY DROPS sets a useful standard for them to aim at and can gain a deserved success. Although beaten at short odds on her reappearance last month, she did bump into an unexposed one and the pair pulled a long way clear of the third.[Paul Smith]

Big price gapper in a maiden  3 consecutive 2nd places augurs well

------------------------------------------------------------
800 Nottingham
Betting forecast: Evs Norse Star, 5/1 Trafalgar Rock, 6/1 Running Wolf, 8/1 Izbushka, 8/1 Tactical Strike, 10/1 Galaxy.

SPOTLIGHT VERDICT: On what he has done compared to today's rivals and given the step up in trip, NORSE STAR probably has an excellent chance. Trafalgar Rock is feared most, trained by Mark Johnston and making his debut both on turf and in a handicap.[Richard Austen]

A handicap with only 2 places but a big price gapper here.

----------------------------------------------------------------
735 Ripon
Betting forecast: 7/4 Flow, 11/2 San Cassiano, 13/2 Red Charmer, 7/1 St Moritz, 9/1 Las Verglas Star, 11/1 Amaze, 12/1 Muffin Mcleay, 12/1 Off The Pulse, 14/1 Ardmay, 14/1 Commissar.

SPOTLIGHT VERDICT: FLOW went close in a big-field York handicap on his final run last season and this progressive colt has decent claims with a tongue-tie applied on his return. San Cassiano and Red Charmer are both respected but it is a worry that they could get involved in a battle for the lead. The other one on the shortlist is Las Verglas Star, who is on a dangerous mark and shaped with some promise in a stronger race last time.[David Moon]

big price gapper in another handicap.209 day absence though for this Flow is very off-putting
----------------------------------------------------------------
810 Ripon
Betting forecast: 10/11 Soul Brother, 7/4 Galvanize, 7/2 Highland Acclaim, 66/1 Lunesdale Buddy.

SPOTLIGHT VERDICT: Well-related SOUL BROTHER has been progressive in three sprint maidens on fast and soft ground and has leading claims on his close second behind a useful rival at Newcastle last month. Galvanize was turned over at odds-on on his seasonal return but it would be no surprise if he made a bold bid here for a yard that won this race with a runner with a similar profile last year. [David Moon]

3 horses at least for 2 places on offer.

FOOTBALL SHORTIES

5pm - Flora Tallinn v Tallinna Kalev - 1.07 home. Look for a win at halftime/fulltime to enhance the odds to the 1.2 minimum we need for a treble.

5pm - Levadia Tallinn v Lokomotiv Johvi - 1.07 home - as above

6pm - B Munich II v Memmingen - 1.2 home. No not THAT Bayern Munich, but it seems a Bayern reserve side.

730pm - Niort v CA Bastia

SHORTLIST

4 horses and only 2 places here.  Probability is good. Not sure we will see the 1.2 minimum we need for the treble for the fav to place.
------------------------------------------------
10am - Ser Williams ( 1.19) v Kvitova - 1st v 6th but 5-0 head to heads  - 5-0 is eyecatching but top 10 players can produce shocks
------------------------------------------------
845pm - Nishikori ( 1.17)v F Lopez - 12th v 29th and 2-2 in head to heads -3 of the 4 meetings have seen a tie breaker set - worried about the head to heads but I think Nishikori is in solid form at present and is just below the 1.2 odds.
